AWARDS AND CITATIONS

After the close of hostilities, many of the fighting men of the 745th were decorated with the Silver Star or awarded the Bronze Star, but at a time too late to make the original printing to be recorded on pages 29, 30 and 31. Unfortunately that information is not currently readily available, so there will not be an updating of that list, and those heroes will have to continue to be nameless.

Excerpt from General Orders Number 65, HQ 1st U. S. Infantry Division dated 16 October, 1946:

"I. FRENCH FOURRAGERE IN THE COLORS OF THE CROIX DE GUERRE 1939-1945

Under the provision of Section LV, AR 600-45, War Department, 22 September, 1943, the following units are cited twice in Orders of the Army by the President of the Provisional Government of the French Republic:

745th Tank Battalion

DECISION NUMBER 280, 22 JULY, 1946

"This unique unit landed on the beach of Colleville on 6 .June, 1944, despite desperate resistance by the costal fortifications and reinforcements of the enemy. In the afternoon of the same day it took possession of the crest overhanging the shore, and pushing inland, occupied important strategic positions, despite the furious German counter-attacks.

In spite of heavy losses, this unit succeeded in establishing and consolidating a strong bridgehead, thus contributing to the decisive victory of Normandy."

S. BIDAULT

"By virtue of the foregoing citations, the President of the Provisional Government of the French Republic has authorized the above-named units to wear the French Fourragere in the colors of the Croix De Guerre 19391945."
